Rationale and Objectives

HCN’s responsibility in a global landscape and as it partners with organizations and individuals from varied backgrounds and diverse perspectives creates a need for a depth of understanding around identity, bias, and power. HCN has partnered with Roots ConnectED to provide Coaches an opportunity to explore mindset work around identity and gain a deeper understanding of bias, power, and perspective.

In the series, Coaches will:

  • explore a deeper mindset around one's own identity.
  • gain a deepened understanding of implicit bias as well as how power and perspective are understood and examined.
  • explore hegemonic systems of oppression (e.g. white supremacy culture), context on a global scale, and impact on practice.

Application to Practice

We believe that to change practices there has to be a change in mindsets. The work of the course allows for self reflection, learning, and consistent examination of practice.

Participants will walk away from this experience with the following:

  • the practice of being in dialogue with oneself differently, a way to think differently about themselves and their work with clients, including but not limited to considering race, gender, neurodiversity, and various perspectives.
  • deepened practices around trust building, active listening, and evoking awareness with clients, supporting a re-examination of the current questions used to develop relationships and ways to add and deepen that practice.
  • develop norms to use with client meetings moving forward.

Participant Expectations

The HCN is a community committed to deepening its understanding of bias, its social and historical context, and its impact on the coaching relationship. It is challenging work and we recognize the emotional labor it requires. We encourage participants to be open and honest about the internal challenges these topics may elicit. At the same time we expect participants to support the learning process of the group, regardless of what their personal emotional reactions may be.

Participants in the program are expected to:

  • be open to new learning and perspectives;
  • participate in every meeting, and give advance notice if there is a conflict to attend;
  • complete the pre- work prior to the start of the sessions;
  • have cameras on and actively participate in the small and whole group conversations.
