About this Event
Human Rights and Intellectual Disability: a double book launch
The Government of Ireland’s National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People 2025-2030 is billed as the first to be developed from a rights-based perspective. In recognition of this significant development, this special event features a panel of four distinguished speakers who will engage in an in-depth discussion of intellectual disability and human rights. The event aims to shine a light on the longstanding marginalization faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities, who have frequently been denied their fundamental rights — and, at times, even denied their humanity.
As part of the event, two thought-provoking books exploring these urgent issues will be officially launched:
These works challenge prevailing narratives and call for a more inclusive and respectful understanding of intellectual disabilities.
Speakers:
- Liam Herrick, Chief Commissioner, Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission
- Neville Cox, Professor of Law & Morality and Registrar of Trinity College Dublin
- Owen Barden, Assistant Professor in Inclusive Post Secondary Education, TCD
- Stephen Unwin, theatre and opera director; father of a young man with profound intellectual disabilities.
