The Coronet Peak Hillclimb returns on November 30th, 2024.This hillclimb starts at Skippers Road and winds up 2.7km through the picturesque Queenstown backcountry. Running with the same start and finish points as when the hillclimb started back in 1972, this event is one that you REALLY want to tick off your bucket list.
Competing cars must have roll protection and drivers need at least an M grade (clubsport) motorsport licence.
It’s free to spectate and there’s a handful of great vantage points along the road, including the spectator hub at the midpoint.
If you want to watch, you can drive your car to the spectator hub before and during the event The road re-opens between runs (every 30-40 mins) to allow spectators to enter and exit.
Not sure what a Hillclimb is? It’s a road-based race event for competition vehicles on a closed road. This means drivers can run flat-out and use both sides of the road as they navigate their way through the turns.
These events see a mixture of cars, from super high horsepower monsters like Hayden Paddon’s Hyundai Kona EV (electric) to old Datsuns like what your Grandma used to drive and everything in between.
