Explore the gentle yet expansive Howgills on this rewarding circuit, taking in Yarlside, Kensgrigg, Randygill Top, and Green Bell. This walk offers rolling ridges, broad summits, and far-reaching views across the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and the heart of the Howgills.Starting from the quiet valley below, the route ascends first to Yarlside (639 m), the second-highest fell in the Howgills. This broad, rounded summit provides sweeping vistas across the surrounding fells and valleys, a perfect introduction to the open, grassy landscapes of the range.
The walk continues south along gentle ridges to Kensgrigg (approx. 540 m), a more intimate fell offering peaceful solitude and panoramic views back toward Yarlside and the distant Dales. From here, the terrain undulates toward Randygill Top (approx. 555 m), a quiet summit with firm, grassy slopes and a sense of isolation that typifies the Howgills.
Finally, the route reaches Green Bell (approx. 560 m), a broad, rounded shoulder providing expansive panoramas over the Howgills’ rolling contours and glimpses of the sharper peaks of the Lake District. The descent follows grassy slopes back into the valley, completing a circuit that combines gentle climbing with open fellside walking and uninterrupted views.
