IAS Residential Fellow Dr Gemma Sou leads a workshop discussing translating research into comics.
About this Event

Have you ever thought about translating your research into a comic? Or ever thought about using comics as a creative method to gather data? Comics present an opportunity to make research more participatory, to gather new and unexpected data, to create more ethical representations of participants and their contexts, and to release your creativity.

Join us for a hybrid workshop with IAS Residential Fellow Dr Gemma Sou, the author of “How to Translate Research into a Comic: Examples from Disaster Scholarship” paper, recently published in the Journal of Disaster Studies (JDS).

Gemma will be joined by Dr Oliver Hooper, Dr Karen Sung & Richard Johnson, whose research and practice also incorporates comics, to discuss the language and conventions of comics, how to decide which findings to communicate, writing the script, choosing and working with an illustrator, participatory scripting, and developing characters.

You will also have an opportunity to create your own comic (or at least part of one!). Ultimately, in this workshop we will explore how to think visually and how to communicate research visually, rather than how to draw.

The workshop is co-hosted by the Journal of Disaster Studies and Loughborough University’s Institute of Advanced Studies.

Arrivals from 2:15 pm for a 2:30 pm start.

International House can be found here on the campus map.

If these in person tickets have sold out, you can still register for the Zoom Webinar.
