Have a favorite family member, friend or pet photo that you’ve wanted to paint? Learn the step by step process from Artist Daniel Roemmelt
Instructor: Daniel Roemmelt, a 39 year arts educator and a full time artist
Appropriate for the Beginner or Advanced Painter
Location: ArtsUnited, Inc. Gallery, 2401 N Dixie Hwy, Wilton Manors
Dates: Mondays, March 9, 16 & 23 / 2:00pm - 4:00pm and / or from 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Supplies will be provided, but, if you have oil paints and brushes and an easel, please bring them along. Also, students are encouraged to bring a photograph (s) of a favorite person or pet, measuring at least 4x6” and a close-up view.

Class 1: Discuss What makes for a good portrait? Investigate the work of John Singer Sargent, Vincent Van Gogh, and Rembrant. Demonstration: Using a grid system.
Process: Prepare your canvas, Sketch an outline using the grid system.
Critique/Feedback: Constant one on one and group instruction, how specific are you, are proportions correct.
Class 2: Discuss What makes for a good portrait? Investigate Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Alice Neel and Grant Wood. Demonstration: How to prepare your pallet, color theory and mixing colors, proper brushes Process: Block in the main shapes and values, investigate light and shadows on the face, develop a direction.
Critique/Feedback: Continuous support throughout the entire class, are you pushing contrast, being specific, accurate?
Class 3: Discuss: What makes for a good portrait? Investigate Chuck Close, Henri Matisse, Graydon Parrish and Kehinde Wiley. Demonstration: Adding layers, various brushstrokes, glazing and scumbling Process: Observe and adjust, continue to move toward finer details, be specific.
Critique/Feedback: Are you using color to your advantage. How do you make your painting unique to you?
