About this Event
Existential crises are like a persistent rash. There's no cure, but if you're suffering from the Big Questions, maybe the How To Be Book Club can be a salve. Come hang out in Book Club Bar's back garden one Saturday each month, and join us in discussing works of philosophical fiction from across different eras and parts of the globe. We'll read the book beforehand (and do us a solid, if you can—get your book from our store), and then gather for casual conversation over drinks. No preparation needed; just bring your book and your curious mind!
This April, we'll explore the possibility and contradictions of utopia as a sociopolitical ideal. At once a sincere imagination of a perfect society and a satire of Europe in the sixteenth century, Thomas More's seminal work, Utopia outlines how a rational government ought to approach communalism, and solve for corruption and inequality. Adrian Shirk's essay collection, Heaven Is a Place on Earth, blends memoir, history and sociology to sketch case studies of modern and ancient utopian experiements. Shirk brings utopia out of More's idealist "no place" and grounds it in the real, material world--hitching along, of course, the infinite and inextricable complications this necessitates.
