About this Event
Please be advised: May's How to Be meeting will take place at the Bushwick location of Book Club Bar, located at 380 Troutman Street.
Existential crises are like a persistent rash. There's no cure, but if you're suffering from the Big Questions, maybe the How To Be Book Club can be a salve. Come hang out in Book Club Bar's back garden one Saturday each month, and join us in discussing works of philosophical fiction from across different eras and parts of the globe. We'll read the book beforehand (and do us a solid, if you can—get your book from our store), and then gather for casual conversation over drinks. No preparation needed; just bring your book and your curious mind!
This May, we'll discuss the Caribbean, identity as shaped by culture, and how—as Édouard Glissant writes in Poetics of Relation —to shift our understanding of historical and contemporary sociopolitical relations from the colonial paradigm of classification and control to one which embraces interdependence, complexity and difference (without heirarchy). And it's only fitting that we anchor our discussion of hybridization in a novel about the Haitian Revolution that was written by a man who was born in Switzerland, raised in Cuba, moved to France as an adult, and finally returned to live out the rest of his life in Cuba—The Kingdom of This World by Alejo Carpentier.
This month's picks: by Alejo Carpentier
& by Édouard Glissant
What your ticket includes:
