Population growth has settled back into a predictable rhythm following a period of very high turbulence 3–5 years ago.
House prices have skyrocketed across the country, with Adelaide's median house purchase price now higher than Melbourne's. A myriad of supply-focused ideas and programs have been launched at both the State and Commonwealth levels to try to address this.
We have seen the launch of the latest Greater Adelaide Regional Plan, which has coincided with a renewed interest in lower-density housing and a rapid expansion of the northern areas of Adelaide.
The State has embarked on significant infrastructure projects that will shape our workforce, budgets, and priorities in the short term, and the function and sustainability of our society over the medium and long term.
While there has been a feeling of rising prosperity for some, cost-of-living pressures have increased the burden on many more households, while also highlighting increasing income and wealth inequality in society.
This panel session will take stock of what has occurred, why, where we would like to be, and what needs to be done to get there. Are we on the right trajectory? What trajectory should we be on, and what should we do to change it? What are some of the policies and levers the next government should focus on, and how could they be pursued?
