A fun and dynamic klezmer ensemble, Hop Skotshne are something of a family collaboration whose passion is to add their unique and inventive interpretations to traditional Eastern European Jewish music, with sources ranging from early 20th century recordings to melodies collected in pre-WWI ethnographic expeditions. Clarinet, trumpet, violin, French horn, accordion and poyk come together to make music designed to make us cry, laugh and dance. The band are a relatively recently formed ensemble that has turned particular focus on a large corpus of previously unknown materials which recently became available in the framework of the Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Project. By performing these melodies, they are contributing to their reintegration into the active repertoire of today’s klezmer community, thus not only preserving, but continuing to create this musical heritage.
A licensed bar will be available in the church. St Mary's is a short walk from Rotherhithe Station. Buses C10, 381, 188, 47, P12 all run nearby.
The church's heating system is antequated and noisy so we will be switching it off during the performance. Please dress warmly!
