She presents on Nicodemus’s history, African American life after slavery, Black pioneers, and freedom’s legacy, drawing from her deep family ties to the town and her role as Executive Director of the Nicodemus Historical Society. Her presentations, like “Children of the Promised Land,” explore themes of self-determination and the experiences of formerly enslaved people. Bates has a series of children's books called “Adventures of Nicodemus Annie.”
