In celebration of Black History Month, this workshop invites educators to explore the rich history of Black creators and makers, from past to present, and how their innovations have shaped culture, art, technology, and society.
We will dive into the legacies of historical Black figures who were pioneers in various fields—artists, inventors, architects, musicians, and more—while also exploring the vibrant possibilities of Afrofuturism as a lens for envisioning the future.
Afrofuturism blends elements of science fiction, African heritage, and liberation narratives, imagining futures where Black people are empowered, innovative, and at the forefront of technological and cultural advancement. Through the exploration of Black makers and the vision of Afrofuturism, educators will gain strategies for incorporating the stories of Black creators into their curriculum, while fostering a forward-thinking, inclusive learning environment for their students.
