On behalf of Anawakalmekak, Tzicatl CDC, and the Gabrielino-Shoshone Nation, we are pleased to invite you to join us for our annual honoring of California Native Nations LandBack Day and Community Celebration, taking place on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Chief Ya’anna Regenerative Learning Village (4500 Via Marisol, Los Angeles, CA 90042).
This year, we amplify the 57th Annual California Native American Day under the theme: Following in Chief Ya’anna Footsteps, Regenerating Indigenous Futurity. Our theme underscores the importance of multi-generational responsibility for environmental reciprocity and respect, inspired by the leadership of the late Chief Ya’anna Vera Rocha. The event aims to highlight the power of transnational and intergenerational relationship-building towards strategic alliances that disempower colonial borders and divisions across the unceded territories of the Gabrielino-Shoshone Nation.
Established in 1998, California Native American Day honors the rich culture and history of California’s Native American peoples. At Anawakalmekak, California Native Nations LandBack Day and Community Celebration was established to commemorate the historic relationship between the Indigenous communities that make up Anawakalmekak and the Gabrielino-Shoshone Nation marked by the return of 12 acres in Northeast LA to the Gabrielino-Shoshone Nation of Southern California’s tribal council. This year, we will celebrate the continuity of Gabrielino-Shoshone environmental leadership by building the first tule and willow house known as a kiiy/kij as a testament to the importance of Indigenous regenerative architecture in the face of the worsening colonial climate crisis.
