A rare two-night program honoring the legacy of Miles Davis and John Coltrane — bringing together pianist Larry Vuckovich, who witnessed their historic 1957 San Francisco performance, and rising trumpet Skylar Tang, one of the most compelling young voices in jazz today. When the Miles Davis Quintet with John Coltrane came to San Francisco for the first time in 1957, performing at the famed Blackhawk club, pianist Larry Vuckovich was there in person, witnessing this historic moment.
Miles’ legendary quintet featured one of the greatest rhythm sections in jazz history — Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Larry later became a member of Philly Joe Jones’ quintet, touring across Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, recording a live album at the Pescara Jazz Festival in 1969, and performing with him in San Francisco.
During that era, Larry was a regular at the Blackhawk, where Miles later recorded his celebrated live albums, and where John Coltrane also performed — placing him directly within one of the most important periods in jazz history.
Even though Skylar Tang is only 19 years old, she is already an extraordinary musician, bringing remarkable depth and soul to her playing. She is gaining increasing national attention as one of the most promising young voices in jazz today.
This concert, taking place on May 15–16 at Meyhouse, promises to be a memorable weekend — a rare opportunity to experience a living connection to jazz history, alongside the next generation of artistry, right here in the South Bay.
