About this Event

The Nissia Shipwreck, Cyprus: An entangled Biography

In 2014, a team from the Maritime Archaeological Research Laboratory (MARELab) of the University of Cyprus organised the first reconnaissance survey at the Nissia shipwreck, Famagusta Bay, Cyprus, with the support of the Honor Frost Foundation.

Maritime-oriented communities in the area had long been engaged with the site, giving it special significance and strengthening its ties to local society. In this context, the initial results of the archaeological work proved crucial for dissemination and public awareness initiatives. The wreck has been dated to the early 18th century and remains one of the few excavated examples from this period in the eastern Mediterranean. Current evidence suggests that the ship was built in northern or western Europe at the end of the 17th century and subsequently operated in the eastern Mediterranean before sinking.

This lecture will present the preliminary results, highlight ongoing research and open questions, and explore the challenges of developing environmentally sustainable excavation methods and in situ preservation strategies.
