This class is for kids ages 8 and up (younger if parents feel the kids are ready, willing and have the attention span).
Homeschool Unit 2) Intro to metallurgy(FE) - Blacksmith 101 Ferrous.
Overview:
We start with going over all of the PPE available (ears, eyes, and hair) , when and how to use them.
Introduction and a shop tour. I'll give a brief overview of the tools we'll be using, Where to find them, what they are used for , and how to use them.
I'll go in depth the description of the parts of the anvil, the purposes they serve, when and how to use them. I will do the same with the forge, hammer, and tongs.
We'll discuss proper anvil height in setup, and it's importance. How this relates to proper and accurate hammer swing.
I'll explain how to properly draw a taper. If there are no questions I'll explain how to light the forge, proper placement of material in the forge. how to safely insert and remove the material from the forge.
I'll demonstrate drawing out the taper
The class will continue in this format of explanation and demonstration, followed by the students following along.
I'll present a challenge to see if the students can foresee how to replicate the decorative hook on the other end of the material so that it ends up an 'S' hook.
We'll Finish up with returning all equipment and shop cleanup, a question and answer period, and a test to see how many of the details explained were retained.
