What was Amherst like in the 1950’s and 1960’s when the population of 1400 matched that of 1760, the year of our town’s charter? What was it like to grow up on a small, insular New England community? How has life changed in our town since those years? What memories do the children have who grew up here share?These were the questions that inspired local authors, Peggy Silva and Sue Spiess to embark on a journey of discovery, gathering stories from over 100 current and former residents. Through public sessions and personal outreach—sometimes to those now living far from the town that shaped them—they collected heartfelt memories of growing up in Amherst during a very different time. The result is a remarkable book that now forms part of the town’s living legacy.
The process of reading and collecting these memories led Peggy and Sue to reflect on their own childhoods—and they discovered how personal storytelling can connect us all—across time, place, and experience.
Now, they invite the community to a special library event where they will share their writing journey and encourage others to consider how their own lives might be captured in writing—whether as gifts for graduations or weddings, keepsakes for reunions, or simply to honor everyday moments for future generations.
