The Great Easter Vigil is the most significant, ancient, and primary Christian liturgy of the year, held in darkness between Holy Saturday sunset and Easter sunrise. It marks the transition from death to life through four parts: the Service of Light, Lessons, Baptism/Vow Renewal, and the Eucharist. The image shown here is from the Resurrection Chapel of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The mosaic depicts Mary Magdalene meeting Jesus Christ. Artists Rowan and Irene LeCompte completed this and five other mosaics for this chapel.
