Author Michael Lewis will share his family's story of both fleeing, and surviving, the Holocaust. He will speak about his book "Flight from Prague: the Making of a Refugee" and his mother's memoir "A Time to Speak".
Flight from Prague – the Making of a Refugee
On the night of 30 September 1938, Harry Lewy flees for his life. At the stroke of a pen, Czechoslovakia’s border region, the Sudetenland, changes from a safe home to a place of danger for any Jew – which includes Harry.
Fear and danger accompany him on his journey across Nazi Germany in search of sanctuary. Ultimately, he finds himself in the United Kingdom, alone, penniless and unwelcome. This story tells of one refugee’s flight towards a new life.
A Time to Speak by Helen Lewis is a memoir which traces her life from childhood in Czechoslovakia to her arrival in the UK. She recounts the growing persecution of Jews under Nazi rule, including the three years from her deportation from Prague to Terezin (Theresienstadt) Ghetto, then to Auschwitz extermination camp and finally to Stutthof concentration camp where she was forced into slave labour. Against all odds she survived.
