You voted and the winner of Hollywood Suite’s “Movies About Movies” Movie Madness bracket is… MULHOLLAND DRIVE (2001)! Join us Tuesday, February 25 as we celebrate a master filmmaker with one of his most lauded, complex and unforgettable films—a film anointed by you as the ultimate movie about movies! A neo-noir that’s part fairytale, part nightmare of mistaken identity and obsessive love, David Lynch’s MULHOLLAND DRIVE burst onto the big screen in 2001 to critical acclaim and audience perplexion. Originally planned and partially shot as a television pilot, only to have it rejected by network execs, the always rebellious director turned MULHOLLAND DRIVE into a feature length film after partnering with a French production company. With it, Lynch launched the career of Naomi Watts, who plays the dual roles of Betty Elms—hopeful, perky, aspiring Hollywood ingenue—and Diane Selwyn, a deeply tortured, scorned actress whose career depression matches her romantic lows. While Lynch’s version of Hollywood is a deeply twisted one, the film’s tagline (“a love story in the city of dreams”) is nonetheless a tribute to the place Lynch changed forever and called home.
