About this Event
Exhibition Statement
This exhibition is a snapshot and a sampling from our studios this January. We’ve had the run of the Visual Arts Center at Hollins during this quiet short term, and we've played and experimented in multiple media: printmaking, photography, sculpture, animation, painting and assemblage. For some of us, this is our first exhibition of artwork in Roanoke (hello!)
Featured Artists and Statement of Work
Elise Schweitzer
Lead Professor
Roanoke, Virginia
My paintings engage with strategies of abstraction as a means to observe, transform, and participate in the material world. This January, I painted at a larger scale and with a new palette of colors that seem to evoke snowy landscapes and underwater cities.

A fun spin on physical animation, bringing whimsy to the eye before screens took over the movement of drawings and handmade crafts.
Chenxi Gao
Professor
China --> Texas
My work explores my relationship with living spaces, household objects, and the sense of home in the shifting cultural and social environments. The layers of imagery, patterns, and materials in my work echo my thought process: where do I come from? What do I do with my memories? Should I keep them forever or put them away? Where am I going next?
I will be showing some monotypes and potentially drawings or etchings.
Mujdah
Student
Manassas, Virginia
