About this Event

The Embassy of the Republic of Haiti, Komite Ayiti Inc. (KAI), and the Association of Haitian Professionals (AHP) are hosting the 2nd Annual Holiday Celebration Showcasing Fanal Art Craft on Friday, December 20, 2024.

Join us for a fun and creative exhibit of fanals at the Embassy's Ballroom! Get ready to display the product of your inner artist and share your creative side while basking in the Culture. A fanal is a lantern crafted like home that is part of Haiti’s Christmas and year-end holiday tradition, unfortunately now on the brink of extinction.

This year's Celebration includes Fanal and Soup Jomou Contests

Our Holiday Celebration will have an exhibit of Fanals and tasting of Soup Joumou from participating contestants. All curated by local Teaching Artists and Chefs with selected Jury and Entertainment. Our continuing Fanal workshops and Art show segment represent our building block towards preserving the tradition. Welcome remarks will be delivered by His Excellency, Haitian Ambassador L. Harold Joseph to be followed by an exposé of the history-context of the fanal tradition and our emblematic Soup Joumou, including the Children's Activities section. Light Refreshments will be served.

For the Fanal and Soup Joumou Contest segment during the event, you will have the opportunity to judge and vote for your favorite fanal and soup joumou upon tasting. Winners will be announced at the event.

If you have a fanal that you created at home or at one of our workshops, please bring it to the Embassy, register for the contest. If you are a remarkable Soup Joumou maker, indulge and showcase your culinary skills. Register for the contest
