Celebrate the Season with a Bluesy California Twist
Namba Arts and Doc Ventura invite you to “Doc the Halls”, an eighth annual tribute to the holiday season filled with bluesy cheer and California charm. This holiday-themed variety night has become a beloved tradition in Ventura – a friendly, laid-back celebration where the community comes together for great music and festive vibes. Get ready for an evening of classic holiday songs reimagined in soulful styles, toe-tapping jams, and heartwarming musical moments. It’s the perfect way to kick off your holidays, Ventura-style, with a mix of genres and generations all sharing the stage.
All-Star Lineup & Special Guests
This year’s “Doc the Halls: Holiday Blues” features an eclectic lineup of talented artists – from blues legends to folk storytellers – each bringing their own flavor to the festivities. Here’s who will be lighting up the stage on this special night:
Donna Lynn Caskey – Ventura’s own “Banjo Gal,” delivering soulful folk and Americana on her clawhammer 5-string banjo. Donna’s warm vocals and uplifting originals will bring a heartfelt folk touch to the evening.
Fito de la Parra – A blues-rock legend best known as the original drummer of Canned Heat, the iconic Woodstock-era band. Fito brings decades of blues history and that classic boogie beat – expect some driving rhythm and blues power from this Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famer.
RJ Mischo – Ventura’s very own international harmonica master, an acclaimed blues harp virtuoso considered among today’s top harp players. RJ’s harmonica (or “harp”) skills will blow you away as he channels Chicago and West Coast blues traditions with ease.
Debbie Davies – An award-winning blues guitarist and singer celebrated for her cool, smooth style. Debbie has played with greats like Albert Collins and won multiple Blues Music Awards – her guitar work and soulful vocals will add “cool cool blues” to our holiday stage.
Lucious Spiller – A deep blues guitarist/vocalist hailing straight from Mississippi, bringing authentic Delta blues soul to the beach. Lucious is a consummate contemporary bluesman known for passionate performances and gospel-tinged vocals, and he’s flying in just for this show – talk about “Deep Blues direct from Mississippi”!
Monte Montgomery – An amazingly versatile Texas-born musician (named one of Guitar Player magazine’s “Top 50 All-Time Greatest Guitar Players”) now showcasing his piano crooner side. Monte is famously a guitar virtuoso, but he’ll surprise us at the keys with smooth vocals and holiday jazz/blues tunes – a true multi-talented treat.
Tom Collins – A jazz guitar poet and local favorite, adding a touch of swinging holiday jazz to the mix. Tom is “one of the best jazz guitarists around,” known for smooth lines and sharp grooves in his playing, and he’ll deliver some hot Christmas jazz licks and mellow instrumentals to get your fingers snapping.
Hank Van Sickle – The consummate professional on bass, anchoring the night’s groove. Hank is a veteran bassist best known for his years with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, and has played with countless blues and rock icons. His rock-solid bass lines will keep everything swinging, from funky rhythms to slow blues walks.
Doc Ventura & Delta by the Beach – Of course, at the center of it all is Doc Ventura himself – our host, producer, and blues aficionado – along with his band Delta by the Beach. Doc is a Chicago-born bluesman turned Ventura local, steeped in Mississippi Delta tradition and West Coast cool. He and his band will tie the whole night together, backing many of the artists and serving up their own blend of “delta by the beach” blues. With Doc’s slide guitar, soulful vocals, and warm personality guiding the show, you know you’re in for a fun, seamless ride through the night’s performances.
