About this Event
Join us at Daiyuzenji for a rare opportunity to experience Hojo, often described as “Zen in motion.”
This special workshop will focus on the Autumn Kata, one of four seasonal forms. Hojo originates in the Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryū school of swordsmanship (16th century), and was transmitted into Zen training by Omori Sogen Roshi as a way to embody correct posture, breathing, and concentration.
Praised by Zen swordsman Yamaoka Tesshu as “as valid a meditative practice as zazen,” Hojo uses mindful, flowing movements to cut through habits and return to one’s original nature.
The session also includes two periods of seated meditation (zazen).
No prior experience is needed. Beginners are welcome.
Daiyuzenji is one of only a few Zen temples in the U.S. where Hojo is practiced, making this a rare cultural and contemplative experience in Chicago.
