Topic of the HKSPD 35th Annual Scientific Meeting:
Addressing the Rising Needs of Children with SEN in Hong Kong: A Multi-Disciplinary Perspective on Health, Education, and Clinical Management

Children with special educational needs (SEN) require specific support due to learning or developmental disabilities such as specific learning difficulties (SpLD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), physical disability, visual/hearing/speech and language impairment, mental illness or intellectual disability. Dental care for the approximately 71,000 children with SEN currently in Hong Kong’s public education system, a population that has grown by nearly 6% in the last year alone, faces critical gaps. These children experience high rates of untreated caries with specialised studies indicating that approximately 70% of SEN preschoolers with active decay have never received dental treatment due to behavioural and sensory barriers. To address these needs a coordinated strategy is required that prioritises early desensitisation protocols, specialised training for practitioners in behavioural management and the integration of oral health into existing SEN rehabilitation frameworks to ensure quality dental care access for every child. Dr Helen Tinsley, Dr Lesley Yip and Ms Amy Tso will let us know more about the needs and behaviours of these children in the meeting.
