v Mobile Health: Technology And Outcomes.
HIV/AIDS is an important global public health challenge, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Despite several advancements in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of effective interventions and all-inclusive healthcare delivery. The manifestation of stigma takes various forms, including social discrimination, social desertion and fear of disclosure.
Global HIV statistics in 2022 gives the following indications as a major source of concern necessitating intense advocacy and awareness as well as interventions for affected people:
§ 39 million people globally are living with HIV.
§ 1.3 million People became newly infected with HIV.
§ 630 000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses
§ 29.8 million people were accessing antiretroviral therapy
§ 85.6 million people have become infected with HIV and 40.4 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses since the start of the epidemic.
§ Women and girls accounted for 46% of all new infections.
The enormous challenge of trying to manage a chronic (incurable) medical condition whilst dealing with complex psychosocial issues associated with their diagnosis. The convergence of HIV and mental health concerns within this demographic poses a significant public health challenge, impacting treatment adherence, disease progression, and overall well-being. There is a growing recognition of the need to integrate mental health services into HIV care settings to provide comprehensive and holistic care for people living with HIV.
Integrated care models have been proven to improve treatment outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and enhance patient satisfaction (WHO, 2019). Untreated mental health disorders impose a substantial economic burden on healthcare systems. Restructuring mental health interventions can lead to cost savings by preventing avoidable hospitalizations, reducing emergency department visits, and minimizing the need for expensive medical interventions (Chisholm et al., 2016). By promoting equity and social justice, the project will promote the realization of the right to health for all individuals, regardless of their HIV status.
Moreover, in addressing these challenges, technology has emerged as a promising tool for evolving healthcare delivery and improving health outcomes, particularly in resource-limited settings. With the universal adoption of mobile devices across various socioeconomic divisions, mHealth involvements provides a scalable and cost-effective approach to addressing barriers to healthcare access, enhancing patient engagement, and promoting health equity (Agarwal et al., 2016). Where traditional healthcare infrastructure may be limited by geographical challenges and inadequate resources, the incorporation of mHealth technology holds huge possibility to catalyze transformative changes in healthcare delivery and population health. Many low- and middle-income countries, faces significant challenges in the effective delivery of health care services to its population, particularly in remote and underserved areas. Challenges faced by patients whilst accessing health care services include fear of discrimination, high cost, prolonged waiting times, and long queues. In spite of a lot of progress made in combating these challenges, there is still a need to bridge the yawning gaps between developed and developing nations through knowledge sharing platforms to help adopt best practices.
