Have you ever seen a plant or animal in the Woods and wanted to know what it was? Join HWF for a guided walk using the iNaturalist app, a community science platform that provides identifications of plants and animals and contributes valuable data for scientific research. We will meet at the Tea Cottage entrance (33.5566, -81.7530/Dibble Rd across from Rhone St) and walk a ~1 mile loop, exploring the flora and fauna of the Woods with iNaturalist. Trails are sandy and hilly, but we will walk slowly and make frequent stops. There are no public restrooms or places to refill a water bottle, so please plan accordingly.
Before the hike, please download the free iNaturalist app and make an account. You may download either the new iNaturalist app or the iNat Classic app (the older version).
Recommended things to bring:
- Comfortable hiking shoes
- Water
- Snacks
- Hat
- Sunscreen
- Binoculars (at this time, the Foundation does not have any loaner binoculars)
- Camera
- Notebook/pencil for recording observations
About Hitchcock Woods: Hitchcock Woods, nestled in the heart of Aiken, South Carolina, is the largest urban forest in the United States at 2,100 acres. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, its 70 miles of trails offer a haven to the public on foot and horseback. Owned and managed by the Hitchcock Woods Foundation, the Woods comprise a mosaic of mature pine forests and bottomland hardwood forests, supporting a diversity of plants and wildlife. The Woods is protected in perpetuity by a conservation easement held by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and is a designated South Carolina Heritage Preserve Trust site.
