Crumlin & Walkinstown History Group, presents 'Brian O'Looney (1828–1901) of Grove Villa House, Crumlin. Scholar, poet and Gaelic revivalist.'
A talk by Peter A. Daly at Walkinstown Library on Wednesday 13 August at 6.30pm.
Peter A. Daly is an author and retired Medical Oncologist, St. James's Hospital, and Associate Professor of Medicine, Trinity College, Dublin.
Brian O’Looney was born in Monreel, Ennistymon, Co. Clare, an Irish-speaking district. Following education at a hedge–school, supplemented by practical education at Cahersherkin Model Agricultural School, he began to collect, transcribe and translate old Irish manuscripts. He later became a member of the Royal Irish Academy and Professor of Irish Language, Literature and Archaeology at the Catholics University of Ireland. Brian was almost fifty when he married a young widow, Susan Curtin, originally from Corofin, Co. Clare, and came to live at Grove Villa House in Crumlin. A committed nationalist, he did not live to see an independent Ireland. He did, however, lay some of the foundations for that achievement and is among those credited with inspiring the Celtic Revival.
