My Place by Sally Morgan has long been regarded an Australian classic since it was first published in 1987 but what is its relevance today?Join Local History Officer, Michelle Campbell, Place Names Project Coordinator, Noelene Mantellato, Sarah York and Dr Nandi Channi to explore how this book continues to resonate almost 40 years later and how it inspired a community member to create a bike tour through zones once prohibited to the indigenous population of Perth.

Sarah York
Community member and keen cyclist and hiker. After reading My Place, Sarah was inspired to ride the Prohibited zones as a way to understand WA history and connect to the present.
Dr. Nandi Channi
Dr Nandi Chinna works as a research consultant, creativity facilitator, and poet based on unceded Aboriginal land in Boorloo (Perth), and Bunuba lands in Fitzroy Crossing, WA. Her poetry has its genesis in a strong determination to craft creative works and poetry as a response to the ecologies and layers of history attached to particular places. Nandi is the author of four poetry collections. The Future Keepers (Fremantle Press 2019) was shortlisted for the Prime Ministers Literary Award in 2020 and was highly commended in the Victorian Premiers Prize 2019. Nandi was awarded the 2021 Western Australian Premiers Writing Fellowship.
Nandi's fourth poetry publication, co-authored with Niykina Elder Dr Anne Poelina and the Martuwarra Fitzroy River, was released by Fremantle Press in August 2024.
