What will I learn?
In this class you will learn Hishaki-nui and Miru shibori stitching techniques. These Shibori techniques are stitched on the fold.
Hishaki-nui techniques make symmetrical patterns and Miru shibori patterns comprise several parallel rows of stitching to create a woodgrain effect.
Content:
– The quilters knot and the surgeons knot required for all stitched work
– How to make the Shibori starting and ending knots to create tight, crisp patterns
– How to sew different types of Shibori stitches on the fold - ori nui (teeth stitch) and maki nui (wrapped stitch)
– How to combine straight stitch and circle patterns
– How to sew the traditional Karamatsu (larch) pattern and how it can be applied to other shapes such as hexagons and hearts
– How to create motifs on the fold by combining the different shibori stitches
– How to make larger patterns using variations of these patterns
– How to dye your fabrics in a genuine indigo vat
– How to set up and maintain your own indigo vat at home
Who is this class for?: Intermediate / have done some Shibori before
Duration: 3 hours
Location: This class is available at the Artist’s studio in Muswell Hill only.
What do I need to provide myself?
- Rubber gloves (these must cover the wrist and should be Marigolds or similar)
- A strong plastic bag to take your wet work home in
- An apron/old clothes (as indigo will stain if splashed onto your clothes)
All fabric, thread and dye is included in this class. You are welcome to bring you own fabric to work on if you prefer. If so, it must have been scoured (washed with detergent) to remove any preserving chemicals or bought PFD (prepared for dyeing).
