Al Hirschfeld drew his first Sondheim show in 1957 when Sondheim wrote the lyrics to West Side Story. Hirschfeld had been drawing the American Theatre for more than thirty years at that point. Yet he would go on and record the next half century of Sondheim on Broadway, off-Broadway, and in films. Join Al Hirschfeld Foundation Creative Director David Leopold as he takes a tour through Sondheim’s career as seen by Hirschfeld and reveals stories behind the lines of the drawings, along with sharing images from the Hirschfeld archives. All of Sondheim’s best-known works will be featured — West Side Story, Follies, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, and Sunday in the Park with George — art drawn from life before the opening night of each of Sondheim’s productions. Leopold recently authored Hirschfeld’s Sondheim (Abrams Comic Arts), a deluxe oversized 11×14-inch “poster” book in which 25 full page images can be easily removed and put right on a wall. A book signing will take place after the talk. This event forms part of Carnegie Hall’s United in Sound: America at 250 festival.
