With adrenaline pumping and your Royal Enfield humming along from Leh to Khardung-La down to the Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake all the way back up to Chang-La, hair blowing in the wind, prayer flags buzzing by, catch your breath at ancient Tibetan monasteries with Buddha statues at your back and scenic vistas to take your breath away, literally!
Ladakh, at the south-eastern edge of the Karakoram Range in the upper Indus River valley, not much smaller than Scotland, bordered by Tibet, Xinjiang, and Northern Pakistan and boasting some of the most breathlessly beautiful mountain scenery on the planet, with motorable passes of record-breaking heights, ancient Tibetan highland monasteries, colourful Buddhas looking out over moonscape landscapes of dunes, double-humped camels, and lowland orchard valleys.
At the lowest points of the valley are cold desert dunes dotted with Bactrian camels, native only to this region and originally used as the main mode of transportation when Ladakh was an important stopover on the ancient trade routes of Central Asia.
Pangong Lake, which derives its name from the Tibetan words for “high grassland lake”, made famous by its technicolour’s of red, blue, and green as well as the many Bollywood movies filmed here! With a sunset planned, we’ll watch the colours change from our lakeside campsite.
And to reach the Nubra Valley requires a traverse through some of the highest motorable passes in the world, at 5360 meters each, Chang-La and Khardung-La boast temples and shrines for those with the bravado to pass by.
Engines on, let’s go!!
Day 1 // Arrival in Leh
After landing in Leh and immigration formalities, we’ll transfer to hotel and start acclimatizing! After breakfast we have a briefing on our Enflields before we take a ride to Shanti Stupa and look around town for some Tibetan handicrafts. We’ll ride along the world’s highest road at 5360 meters, Khardung-La, and take in the views as we descend through the varied landscapes of cold high-desert to white Nubra sand dunes. Stop at the Diskit Monastery with its imposing colourful Buddha statue looking over the valley. After a long day of riding, we’ll find a nice spot for dinner and check-in to our hotel.
Day 3 // Agyam & Warila Pass
After breakfast we’ll give our legs a chance to stretch with a hike around the Agyam and it’s many local farms. Hop back on the Enfields to Warila Pass with breath-taking views from our lunch spot before heading back to Agyam village and overnight in homestay.
Day 4 // Pangong Lake & Shayok River
After farm-fresh breakfast it’s back on the bikes to Pangong Lake along the Indo-China border, with its many shades of blue, green, and red.
