HILDA JENNINGS: AN ADVOCATE FOR THE DISADVANTAGEDFor over fifty years Hilda Jennings used her considerable skills and abilities to improve the lives of so many disadvantaged people in the East End of London, in Brynmawr, South Wales and on Barton Hill, for little reward and recognition. Hilda was the warden of the University Settlement Barton Hill from 1937 until 1957. She was brilliant at supporting and empowering the people of Barton Hill.
The Barton Hill History Group and the Women that made Barton Hill project has led to the publication of a book Hilda Jennings An advocate for the disadvantaged. It has been an honour and a privilege to uncover Hilda’s incredible life story. There will also be the installation of a plaque as a lasting tribute to her as a pioneer, bringing about positive change for the Barton Hill community.
The plaque will be unveiled on the Arts and Crafts Cottage at the Wellspring Settlement, Ducie Road Barton Hill, where Hilda lived and worked on her book Societies in the Making. Members of the wider Jennings family will be there to help celebrate the dedicated and lifelong work of Hilda Jennings on Tuesday October 21 2025 from 1pm.
