It's a special Mischief Night at PhilaMOCA this year with a thrilling live set from Sacred Bones recording artist and avant garde composer Hilary Woods leading a trio comprised of pioneering drummer Gabriel Ferrandini and experimental violinist Oliver Turvey, exploring the depths of Woods' critically acclaimed recent recordings. This show is followed by a screening of the 1973 horror folk classic THE WICKER MAN! This is a seated event!
Working across song, sound, writing and analogue film, Irish artist Hilary Woods' evocative compositions cultivate practices that are in call and response to each other. Her heavily processed sonic excavations embedded in drone, field recordings, electronics, piano and voice give way to an intimate and intuitive “wild and dusky wilderness” (Boomkat). Signed as a recording artist to Sacred Bones Records since 2018, Hilary’s most recent album, the hypnotic and critically acclaimed Acts Of Light (2023) is a majestically moving record rooted in physicality and feeling. Her music has been described as “the stuff of Bosch paintings” made up of “stark and haunting compositions that stand on the edge of a knife.” (Bandcamp)
After recent sold-out shows in London’s Café Oto and The Gallery at the Complex Dublin, Hilary brings her rare and exhilarating live performance to Pioneer Works with her full band comprised of visionary drummer Gabriel Ferrandini and experimental violinist Oliver Turvey. Ferrandini’s pioneering impulse to free the drums from their conventional confines creates states of confluence between rhythm, texture and harmony whilst Turvey’s modulating idiosyncratic lyricism explores the cavernous arid mystery of Woods’ compositional sound world.

About THE WICKER MAN:
After receiving an anonymous letter about a missing 12-year-old girl, devoutly Christian Police Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward) travels by seaplane to a remote Scottish island to investigate. But the islanders welcome neither his badge nor religious devotion, for Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) and his devoted followers worship only the pagan gods of old - and those gods demand a sacrifice. Howie fears for the missing girl's life and follows every possible lead to find her - despite the islanders' interference - before she becomes a human sacrificial lamb.
