The Royal Geographical Society is pleased to welcome once again Marco Foehn to lead a field trip to discover some of the most spectacular views that Lantau Island’s Southwest Peninsula has to offer. The highlight of the trip is a visit to the Chinese landscaped garden, Lung Tsai Ng Yuen, which is situated directly above a waterfall surrounded by hills. This garden is usually closed to the public, however an exclusive private visit has been organised for RGS-HK members.
Hot water, tea, and coffee are being served at the garden. Participants are encouraged to bring a packed sandwich or lunch to enjoy there.
On the route, visible are some of the local wildlife, including dragonflies, butterflies and, occasionally, a feral cow can be found grazing. The ridgeline offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area of Tai O. A guided tour of the Lung Tsai Ng Yuen garden is led by the owner, David Wu, to further explain the biodiversity, elements and history of the Chinese garden.
There is a choice of two routes for each attendee:
Team A, the distance of this hike is approximately 10 km. Follows the Lantau Trail, leading from Keng Shan Road towards Man Cheung Po and later continuing all the way to the fishing village of Tai O. It is generally considered a moderately challenging route with spectacular views along the way. The beautiful landscaped hills offer a pleasant hike with some interesting scenery along the way.
Team B, the distance of this hike is approximately 8km. Follows the Catchwater and this route is slightly shorter and less demanding.
Both teams will visit the Lung Tsai Ng Yuen Garden and from there will continue the hike towards Tai O. Please note that all participants are required to have a certain level of physical ability for hiking.
Marco Foehn arrived in Hong Kong in the early 1980s and worked for many years as a banker. He later became Chief Operating Officer at German Swiss International School and Director of WalkHK. With his passion for Hong Kong, he has shown tourists and locals all around Hong Kong, introducing them to the local history and culture, and explaining how this city has grown into a major trading city in Asia.
