Hike Through History ~ Celebrate the Schuylkill Navigation System

The Schuylkill Canal, or Schuylkill Navigation System, was a significant canal along Pennsylvania's Schuylkill River, established as a commercial waterway in the early 19th century. Chartered in 1815 and operational by 1825, it facilitated vital transportation and water power to the region. While in operation, it promoted anthracite coal mining, with mules pulling barges from Port Carbon to Pottsville and Philadelphia, and sometimes to New York City. The canal existed until 1931.
On May 3, join BHC’s hiking guide, Paul Schuman, along with Leesport Lockhouse Historian, Ryan Strauss, as we delve into the Schuylkill Navigation System in the Leesport area while commemorating the 200th anniversary of the canal. This hike covers less than four miles on relatively flat terrain, primarily utilizing the Schuylkill River Trail.
Tickets are $10/BHC Members and $15/Non-Members. Hikers are requested to gather at the Leesport Fire Department parking lot (E, W. Wall Street, Leesport), directly across from the Leesport Lockhouse, 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour.
