The King's Hike: Volcanic Lakes, Lush Forests & the Myth of the Rex NemorensisSaturday, 2 May 2026 · 09:30 – 13:30
Albano Laziale, Castelli Romani
Walk the ridge between two ancient volcanic craters on one of the most scenic circuits in Lazio. This guided hike takes you through forest trails above Lake Albano — nestled beneath the Pope's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo — and on to a secret terrace above Lake Nemi, whose shores inspired the Scottish anthropologist James George Frazer and the mysterious legend of the Rex Nemorensis, the King of Nemi.
At roughly 16 kilometres with 230 metres of elevation gain, the route is accessible to most hikers in good health, including families with children aged 14 and above. Expect shaded forest paths, open panoramic stretches, and a comfortable pace with stops for stories along the way.
The hike is guided in English by a certified AIGAE nature guide.
