Candide,Leonard Bernstein’s take on Voltaire’s story, follows a good‑hearted but clueless young guy who keeps getting knocked around by life—wars, earthquakes, shipwrecks, getting sold off like property—you name it. Through all of it, he keeps repeating his teacher’s feel‑good slogan that this is “the best of all possible worlds,” even when the world is clearly beating him up. He chases his sweetheart Cunegonde across continents, only to find more nonsense and cruelty at every stop. After enough hard knocks to last ten lifetimes, he finally meets an old farmer who doesn’t bother with big speeches or fancy ideas. The man just works his land, minds his business, and lives in peace. That’s when Candide finally gets it: real satisfaction comes from putting in honest work and taking care of what’s yours—summed up in the line, “we must cultivate our garden.”
