Empowering Women, Fostering Peace: Highlights from the High-Level Dialogue on Women, Peace and Security in Nairobi! From 30 July to 1 August 2025, Mr. Walter Maina, Research & Knowledge Management Officer at the African Union Office of the Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security, participated in the High-Level Dialogue on Women, Peace and Security in Nairobi, Kenya.
Under the theme “Translating UNSCR 1325 into Action: Driving Regional Security and Global Commitments in Eastern Africa”, the dialogue convened governments, civil society, donors, and regional bodies to assess progress and reignite collective action on the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.
Mr. Maina of the African Union emphasized the urgent need to bridge the gap between commitment and action, ensuring women are not just beneficiaries but leaders in the peacebuilding process.
Key takeaways:
• Renewed political commitment to implement UNSCR 1325
• Focus on financing, localization of National Action Plans (NAPs), and regional coordination
• Calls to institutionalize women’s leadership in peace processes
• Solidarity with grassroots women and communities in crisis
The Outcome Report reaffirmed the urgent need to scale up efforts and ensure that women are at the center of peacebuilding — not as beneficiaries, but as leaders.
The AU Office of the Special Envoy on WPS reaffirms its commitment to advancing gender justice, inclusive governance, and sustained peace across Africa. "Amani, roho ya mama – Peace is the soul of a woman."
