This free program examines the hidden meanings embedded in Negro spirituals sung before and after the Civil War. These songs carried coded messages that provided guidance on when and how enslaved African Americans could safely escape to freedom. In her program, historian and storyteller Connie Martin will use musical recordings and storytelling to reveal how spirituals functioned as tools of communication and survival. Following the presentation, children from Proctor Center’s after-school program will sing several songs featured in Martin’s program. This lecture was made possible by Proctor Center and by Illinois Humanities, which is supported in part by the Illinois General Assembly, as well as by contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
