Hidden Histories: Expanding Narratives and Inclusive Storytelling at Historic House Museums

Historic house museums have long shaped how we understand the past—but whose stories have been centered, and whose have been left untold?
Hidden Histories is a dynamic panel discussion that brings together museum professionals, historians, and cultural practitioners to explore how historic sites can move beyond traditional narratives to tell fuller, more inclusive stories.
Hosted in partnership with the North Andover Historical Society and North Shore Juneteenth Association Inc., this conversation will examine how historic house museums are reinterpreting spaces, collections, and archives to acknowledge the lives, labor, and experiences of marginalized and underrepresented communities. Panelists from peer organizations will share case studies, challenges, and successes in reshaping interpretation, engaging communities, and addressing difficult or overlooked histories with honesty and care. The evening includes a moderated panel discussion followed by audience Q&A (Approx. 90 minutes)
Designed for museum professionals, educators, students, and history enthusiasts, this program invites attendees to reflect on the evolving role of historic sites—and to consider how expanding narratives can deepen public understanding, foster belonging, and create more meaningful connections to the past.
Panelists Include:
 Livy Scott, Curatorial Fellow & Kristen Swanberg, Managing Director, Education & Engagement (The Trustees)
 Lucas Griswold, Director of Interpretation and Education (The Glass House)
 Melinda Huff, Director of Museum Operations (Historic New England )
 Leslie Jones, Director of Museum Affairs and Chief Curator (The Society for the Preservation of Newport County)
 Nikki Turpin, Board President (Robbins House)
Panel will be moderated by Lucinda Brockway, Senior Managing Director of Cultural Resources at The Trustees.
