About this Event

Hi-Fi Night School Year Three - Global Studies

For our third year of Hi-Fi Night School, we introduce Global Studies, a focused program dedicated to exploring music across cultures navigating periods of complexity and change. Through high-fidelity playback and contextual framing, each session creates space for reflection, cultural exchange, and connection. Set within our dedicated listening environment, the series invites audiences to engage deeply with music not just as sound, but as story, memory, and shared experience.

Evenings center on deep, intentional listening. Selections are played in full or in meaningful excerpts on a curated high-fidelity system, followed by contextual storytelling and guided dialogue. To further ground each experience in place and culture, evenings are paired with regionally inspired libations and small bites developed in collaboration with local chefs and restaurants.

In moments when division can feel amplified, Global Studies positions art and sound as unifying forces. At its core, Global Studies affirms music as connective tissue, carrying resonance across borders and reminding us that beyond identity and ideology, we share more than we are led to believe.

Session One - Venezuela featuring Osmar Romero of El Marchante

We’re honored to open this next chapter with Osmar Romero of El Marchante. His work lives at the intersection of music, memory, and cultural preservation. Raised in Caracas, Osmar brings firsthand perspective on the role music has played across generations in Venezuela, both as a reflection of everyday life and as a response to periods of instability and transformation. For this presentation, he will share a curated selection of sounds from his home country, providing context on how these sounds have both documented and shaped the nation’s evolving identity.

What began as a modest collection, his library has grown into an archive of more than 130,000 pieces, forming one of the most significant bodies of Latin American and Caribbean music of its kind.

With a presence spanning Caracas and Los Angeles, his collaborations include local institutions such as the LA Phil and The Music Center and beyond. Osmar’s work continues to honor regional heritage, amplify overlooked voices, and create new pathways for cultural dialogue through sound.

For this evening, we are honored to have Carmen, Osmar’s 89-year-old grandmother and a traditional Venezuelan cook, preparing a special homemade dessert for us to enjoy as we settle into an evening filled with incredible sounds and stories. Regionally inspired libations crafted by duo behind Vanessa and Alisa Catering

Join us as we begin another year of deep listening, shared experience, and global connection through music
