Beethoven's Eroica Symphony symbolizes, more than any other work, the transition from the Classical to the Romantic Style. Beethoven, who supported the ideals of the French Revolution intended to dedicate it to Napoleon, but tore up the dedication page when he learned that Napoleon had declared himself emperor. His eventual title for the symphony, Heroic, celebrates an idea rather than a person. The Symphony will be performed in a chamber arrangement written especially for ICP. Bernard Herrmann is known primarily as the composer of many of Alfred Hitchcock's film scores and is recognized as one of the most significant and influential film composers of the 20th century. He was also a composer of concert works, with Souvenirs de voyage being among his most lyrical and moving pieces. Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff, whose life was cut tragically short by the Second World War, is one of the fascinating voices of the 1920s. The Sonata for Flute and Piano is an exciting work, full of folk and jazz influence.Bernard Herrmann Souvenirs de voyage
