Visit us this coming Tuesday 14th April for the first in a series of Hermitage Open Days providing a rare opportunity to view inside our Hermitage Summerhouse which is an outstanding example of 19th century rural craftsmanship. Its walls are clad with thousands of ‘fish-scale’ wooden shingles, and a floor consisting entirely of deer bones, pushed into the earth with their ‘knuckle’ ends uppermost. Fragments of stained glass from the original church at Bicton were used for the interior windows and the walls are lined with wickerwork. Nick, our Hermitage expert will be happy to answer any questions you may have and the train will be running to take you there on all Hermitage open days.
