Heritage Planning - full day experience

We will provide an overview of the legislative framework governing how Scotland’s historic environment is managed and protected.
About this Event

Members of Historic Environment Scotland’s Heritage Team and Stirling Council will discuss how they manage change to Scotland’s built heritage, both in strategic terms as well as practical matters. This includes how proposals to alter listed buildings or build new developments in conservation areas are reviewed, considered and determined both fairly and transparently.

A networking lunch will provide you with the opportunity to continue discussions and explore the Engine Shed.

Our full-day experience includes an afternoon tour through Stirling’s Old Town to discuss recent developments in the conservation area, key buildings of concern for the Council and other matters affecting the significance of the city’s historic townscape.

We will end with day with further discussion and refreshment at one of Stirling’s oldest pubs.

For those who cannot join us in person, a virtual ticket is available for the morning session.

Learning outcomes

You will:

  1. Understand how buildings, monuments, sites and areas are protected (and by whom) and how change is managed in Scotland.
  2. Recognise how the cultural significance of Scotland’s traditional buildings and places is determined and how this informs decisions on applications to repair, alter or demolish.

Who should attend?

We encourage graduates, heritage professionals and building practitioners from all disciplines interested in developing their knowledge and practice in traditional buildings to consider attending.

We also welcome people responsible for a traditional building, monument or site. It would also be useful for those with an interest in the management of conservation work at a strategic/policy level or an interest in the broader aspects of building conservation in Scotland.

Additional Information

Historic Scotland Members can claim 10% discount using the promo code HSMember. Please bring your membership card on the day.
