The History of Women in Policing by Chris Upham MBE BEM
Retired CID Detective Chris Upham MBE BEM from the Museum of Policing in Cheshire describes the history of women in policing. Did you know that Edith Smith, the first female police officer with full power of arrest, was from nearby Birkenhead? Learn about the changes in uniform across police history, from the time when female police officers were expected to carry so-called “lady truncheons” designed to fit in a handbag… to modern policing where standard issue body armour has recently been revamped with gender-specific designs.
