A Glimpse of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft in the Ozarks
Presented by John Miller
In the winter of 1818-1819, a young inexperienced New York scientist traveled on foot from St. Louis to northwest Arkansas and made a significant discovery near present day Ozark. His journals about his “tour” through the Ozarks revealed an amazing snapshot of the animals, plants, and people who were the first settlers in the Missouri Territory.
This 3rd-person interpretation as someone who knew Schoolcraft, will discuss why Schoolcraft made his journey, where he went, some of his findings, and the importance of his journals. You will also see and touch items that Schoolcraft would have used along his journey.
John Miller is a retired naturalist with the Missouri Department of Conservation. His passion is interpreting the relationships of nature and history.
