Dr Jane Jordan describes how Henry Doulton's Lambeth Art Pottery employed female ceramic designers and decorators
About this Event

Doulton’s Lambeth Art Pottery was remarkable for employing a large number of female ceramic designers and decorators―a fact recognised when Sir Henry Doulton was awarded the Albert Medal for Industry in 1885. This illustrated talk takes us inside Doulton’s to discover why so many of these women chose long careers over marriage, which at the time was considered woman’s true career. We will look at examples of artists and their assistants from that original pioneering generation, many of whom chose to be buried in West Norwood Cemetery, the final resting place of Sir Henry Doulton himself.

Dr Jane Jordan is Chair of the Friends of West Norwood Cemetery, a Lambeth Tour Guide, and an expert in C19th women’s history.
