For its 10th anniversary, Immortalizing the Mortal returns with a specimen both ordinary and extraordinary: a gallbladder filled with gallstones.
Once dissolved in bile, now hardened into stone, these concretions speak of pressure, pain, time, and transformation. Throughout history, gallstone disease has shaped the lives and works of not only doctors and patients, but also artists who reminded us that illness does not merely interrupt life. It alters perception, language, and creation itself.
It is our pleasure to invite students to engage with this specimen through art: visual pieces, poetry, music, dance, essay, multimedia works, or anything your heart calls out for! Works may be presented in person, live via Zoom, or through a designated presenter. Whether your background is from medicine, rehabilitation, nursing or any healthcare program: we welcome you all.
The evening will include facilitated discussions on medicine and the humanities led by Dr. Fraser and Dr. Liao (McGill University), exploring how suffering, embodiment, and care shape both artistic expression and medical practice. Join us as we carve stories from the stones: food, refreshments and engaging discussions are guaranteed!
An advance specimen viewing session will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 5:30pm at the Maude Abbott Medical Museum.
