Join us at The Poly for three short films made in Cornwall. From The Culch
Paul Mulraney
‘From the Culch’ is assembled from the bin cuts of a lost 1975 BBC documentary about the Fal River oyster fishery.
After the documentary was broadcast a can of randomly assembled 16mm film was given to Dennis Laity, crewman on the working boat George Glasson, as a memory of his brother who passed away just after shooting wrapped.
The Silent Catch: Oyster Dredging by Sail in Cornwall
Katherine Dally & Savanna Howell
The Silent Catch is a short environmental film which showcases oyster dredging under sail in the Carrick Roads, Cornwall. The documentary follows a day in the life of Chris Vinnicombe, an experienced oyster fisherman, who reflects on the benefits of the fishery. Filmed and produced by Savanna Howell, a Natural History and Marine Photography student at Penryn Campus, and Katherine Dally, an English and Creative Writing student at Falmouth University.
Kerdroya and The Cornish Hedge
Will Coleman & Gemma Gilbert
A beautiful and thoughtful short film unpacking the overlooked cultural treasure of Cornish Hedges and also celebrating 'Kerdroya' the 56m diameter classical labyrinth built from Cornish hedging in the middle of Bodmin Moor.
Kerdroya, the Cornish Landscape Labyrinth, is a work of Slow Art.
The Classical Labyrinth icon is a 4,000-year-old visual symbol found across the proto-Celtic world and beyond, inviting the pilgrim along its meditative pathway.
Cornish Hedges are the oldest structures on the planet still in use for their original function, an ecologically benevolent craft handed down aurally through countless generations.
In the middle of Bodmin Moor, Kerdroya entwines these two ancient cultural phenomena and launches them into the future as a beacon of hope for those yet to come.
